Mental health care-seeking and barriers: a cross-sectional study of an urban Latinx community

By alejandro - In News - febrero 11, 2026

Gwaltney and colleagues (34) validated a tablet-based version of the electronic Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (eC-SSRS) against an interactive voice response (IVR) version. The outcome of interest was the prediction of suicide attempts, measured through area under the curve (AUC) metrics. The quantitative study included a total of 35,654 participants, with 17,630 used to develop the DRS and 18,024 involved in its validation.

The intervention was effective for youths with high ecodevelopmental family risk by reducing externalizing disorders and substance use. Through our search, we found a total of 10 different family interventions, with Familias Unidas being the one with the most amount of information available. Under this domain we also noticed that a few studies failed to indicate whether people who were delivering the intervention were blinded to the group to which participants had been assigned. These studies were deemed to have some concerns in this domain because although participants had been randomized to the intervention condition, they were aware of the condition they had been randomized to, which could increase the risk for group contamination (Higgins et al., 2011).

  • “Telehealth apps have transitioned from novelties to necessities in modern holistic healthcare, making wellness more accessible,” she adds.
  • Supervised by mental health professionals, trained volunteers assess suicide risk and link callers to care resources.
  • There’s a link between major depressive episodes and substance use in Latinx adolescents, as well as a higher rate of suicidal thoughts in people who suffer from substance abuse.

This knowledge will help us shape future anti-stigma interventions for diverse populations,” says Dupont-Reyes. A school-based educational program successfully lowered mental health stigma among Black and Latinx adolescents. There may be suicide prevention approaches and interventions in other Spanish-speaking Latin American countries that could be applicable to the U.S. population. Although it is best to create multiple adaptations of interventions with community participation to meet the needs of a diverse racial-ethnic group like the Hispanic/Latinx population, this may not be financially and logistically feasible.

Mental Health Challenges and Support: Latinx Communities

Alternatively, for example, the barrier related to concerns about the treatments that are available increases the likelihood of connecting to care.Open in a new tabSummary Plot of Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) Values for Features Impacting Likelihood to Connect Features are sorted based on their importance for our primary outcome, with the top features being the most important. As a sensitivity analysis, we repeated this The Loveland Foundation therapy support approach using different ranges for parameters and numbers of splits in the cross-validation to observe how the most important barriers to receiving care varied across parameter settings. The most cited individual barriers were ‘concerns about the treatment available’ (65.0%), ‘not being able to afford the financial costs of care’ (62.9%), and ‘wanting to solve the problem on my own’ (62.7%). In short, the SHAP was used to identify the main barriers for connecting to care and to generate hypotheses for future work.

CHRIS 180 Counseling Centers provide trauma-informed care through CHRIS Counseling Center offices for all types of trauma, difficulty, family issues, and mental health and substance use challenges. The presented clinical manifestations in the particular case of an emerging community with a high proportion of immigrants from the NT suggest that these new communities have important mental health needs that need to be further studied. Latinos have also been shown to be more likely than non-Latinos to somatize psychological distress 41, 43 and tend to rely on the general medical sector rather than seeking specialty mental health services.51 This information is important to note given that SSIDC was both the most common diagnostic category to seek care among Latinos receiving TAP services and second most common health service encounter. Latino immigrants living in new settlement areas, especially those without documents and as immigration policy has toughened, face considerable stressors that might place them at risk for mental health disorders.
